WHY ANOTHER WIKI ?

This Wiki has been created to educate and help people who are confronted with transposable elements (often referred as TE in these pages), so that they may understand what these small genomic beasts are. It will also serve as a gathering place for information from specialists, so that we may confront theories as well as data in order to better understand the incredible and marvelous world of the TEs.

You will find The 'How-To' and Quick Syntax explanation for this specific Wiki following this link

In the same way, all users (registered or only curious) have to read and follow the Rules of this Wiki.

BASIC DEFINITION of TRANSPOSABLE ELEMENTS

Transposable elements are a minimal 'genome', which contains a set of genes and regulatory sequences that enable it to produce copies of itself, change its genomic location, or both.
They have been described in all genomes investigated so far.

A more complete definition will be found here, as well as all the discussions about this definition.

Their evolution is supposed to start with LUCA and so on, and they evolved in all individuals and species since this time, and various theories exist about their origin.

Their movement within the genome is called transposition. See Life Cycle for more information.

CLASSIFICATION

Briefly,TEs are separated into 2 classes, depending on their transposition intermediate.

Classes are subdivided in subclasses, orders, then in superfamilies, families and subfamilies.

In this website we will present the different subdivisions and the main representative elements from each family as subfamily when possible.

A more detailed explanation will be found here
